Company car
Almost every self-employed person is in doubt from time to time. Should I buy a business car or not? That question is not so simple and is quite personal Do you want a company car because you want to drive in a tax-efficient way, do you opt for a luxury car, a van or a youngtimer? Everything is possible, but the addition to taxable income for private use of a car is important in all cases.
Points
Isn’t it about luxury, making the neighbor jealous and not about comfort? Do you just want to drive as cheaply as possible at a low additional tax? Then buy a car that is more than fifteen years old. That’s called a youngtimer. The addition is then 35 percent of the current value and all costs are deductible.
For the other cars, you will receive a higher addition to the purchase price. For a new car or a car up to 14 years old, this addition is 22 percent of the list price. Provided you drive that car privately for 500 kilometers or more per year. For an energy-efficient car, the addition is currently 16 percent, but not from the current value, but from the list price. The addition applies if you drive more than 500 kilometres per year privately.
Maintenance
You do have the advantage that you can deduct the costs of maintenance, new tyres, radio and petrol, as well as road tax and insurance, from the profit. The purchase price of the car – minus the residual value – is depreciated over five years. We take into account a residual value of ten percent.
We often advise you to buy a car that is between one and fourteen years old privately. The addition to taxable income for a car of this age is higher than the depreciation and often less advantageous from a tax point of view than a new car.
Of course, you decide whether you want to buy this car for business or pleasure. The choice also depends on the estimated number of business kilometers you expect to drive per year.
For all business cars, you can deduct the VAT on petrol and maintenance, but you have to add 2.7 percent of the list price for sales tax every year.
Lease
You can buy or lease the new car. The interest on the lease is deductible. Many self-employed people switch to leasing to keep money available for investments in other things. With a lease, you know where you stand in the coming years with a monthly amount.
Private car
If you don’t want to buy a company car and you prefer to drive business kilometres with your private car, you can still charge costs to the profit and loss account.
Mail the total of the kilometres driven for business purposes at 0.23 eurocents per kilometre to your accountant. It is and remains a – small – deduction.
Balance sheet
That is enough for a self-employed person. It is included in the monthly price of 80 euros excl. VAT. This balance sheet and profit and loss account is sufficient to file your income tax return as well.
Just like in the financial statements, the balance sheet also shows your assets and debts as at 31 December. It’s just that it’s not such an extended version.
Financial statements
Many self-employed people have annual accounts drawn up unnecessarily, which will cost you hundreds of euros and is not mandatory for the self-employed. You will then receive an extensive book with key figures that, in principle, you do not need.
The software of the self-employed accountant also produces the profit and loss account showing turnover (excluding VAT) and costs (excluding VAT). The accountant will include these amounts in the income tax return.
Mortgage
Are you going to buy a house and do you need annual accounts for financing? Then we can also draw up those annual accounts for old years.
De Hypotheker does not always agree to a PDF printout of the balance sheet and profit and loss account when applying for a loan or mortgage.
We will then still draw up annual accounts, which will cost you 280 euros excluding VAT per financial year.
