Am I entitled to a start-up deduction as a freelance self-employed person?
Depending on the circumstances, you may be eligible as an entrepreneur in The Hague, yes. As a starting self-employed person in The Hague, you are entitled to the self-employed deduction and the first three years also to the start-up deduction of € 2,123, if you spend at least 1,225 hours per year on your business. However, there are conditions attached to claiming the start-up deduction, namely that you are already entitled to the self-employed person’s deduction and have not applied the self-employed deduction more than twice in the past five years.
Is it useful to have a company car as an entrepreneur in The Hague?
For entrepreneurs, it seems advantageous to put a car on the company, since costs such as depreciation, fuel, insurance, maintenance, road tax and parking fees (often high in The Hague) can all be deducted from the company. However, an addition of a maximum of 22% of the list price applies to the profit of the self-employed person, unless it can be demonstrated that another car is private and no more than 500 kilometers have been driven privately with the business car. In the case of a new car, it is usually cheaper to put it on the case. In the case of an older car, an addition of up to 25% of the original list price and depreciation of the current value applies. If the self-employed person keeps the car private, business mileage can be claimed at a rate of € 0.19 per kilometer. If more than 10% of the kilometres driven are business, 75% of the VAT on all fuel and maintenance costs can be deducted if the car is kept private.
Does a self-employed person have to file annual accounts?
In the Netherlands, entrepreneurs are not obliged to draw up annual accounts. This can be a welcome cost saving as a self-employed person. A balance sheet and a profit and loss account (included in our all-in accounting package) are usually sufficient.

Finally, a handy tip for freelancers. A company car can give you quite a bit of benefit because many costs are deductible.
In short, there are three types of cars that are beneficial for business driving: a brand new car, an electric car or a youngtimer (car of fifteen years or older). Each type brings its own advantages,
If you buy a business car, you will get the VAT back on purchase (21 percent). The depreciation of the car, fuel and maintenance costs, road tax, insurance, parking fees, and the cost of the lease are deductible.
All of these costs are deductible from your winnings. Your advantage is greatest if you tour privately by car for less than 500 kilometers.
If you drive more, you will receive an addition of 22 percent of the new value. As long as your costs are higher on an annual basis, it can be interesting. But in principle, we usually only recommend a brand new car as a business. Or the youngtimer of course. An electric can and often is also inexpensive. But it all depends on your specific situation.
Also pay attention to the addition
So calculate the pros and cons carefully. Because if you also use your business car as a private means of transport, you may have to add more.
If you drive less than 500 kilometres per year privately with your business car, there is nothing to worry about. But 500 kilometers is very little on an annual basis and many people will soon cover more private kilometers. And then something changes. Anyone who uses the company car privately for more than 500 kilometres per year must pay an additional tax.
